Panoramas of the World

Rockefeller Center I (New York)

The observation deck on the 70th floor of the General Electric Building was recently opened to the public. Contrary to the Empire States Building, here you don’t have to wait for long to go up. And you get a clear view of Central Park.

The area of Rockefeller Center covers about ten hectares. In the thirties, a city within a city was developed here. 14 skyscrapers are part of this area between 48th and 51st street. 230 houses were torn down for this purpose. Originally the oil billionaire John D. Rockefeller Jr. had other plans. He wanted to build the Metropolitan Opera there. But the stock market crash of 1929 changed everything. In front of the Rockefeller Center at Christmas time you will find the largest Christmas tree in New York. It is about 20 meters high.
