Construction of this bridge was celebrated as the eighth wonder of the world at the time. It spanned 530 meters across the East River, and was the first bridge connecting Manhattan with the city of Brooklyn, which was still independent at that time. It took 13 years to build this bridge. It was completed in 1883 under the direction of the German engineer John A. Roebling and his son. The columns of the bridge, with its neo-Gothic arches, rise up approximately 90 meters.
