Panoramas of the World

Valdez (Alaska)

Valdez has a population of 4000 people and is one of Alaska’s most important ports. It is a starting point for boat trips to the Prince William Sound. Because of the surrounding mountains and glaciers it is also called the “Switzerland of Alaska.”

The city was completly destroyed by an earthquake in 1964. Later it was rebuilt very close to its original location. In 1989, Valdez got worldwide publicity when the oil tanker Exxon Valdez spilled 40 million liters of oil into the water at Bligh Reef, about 40 km (25 miles) from Valdez. Although the oil did not reach Valdez, it destroyed much of the marine life in the surrounding area.
