Panoramas of the World

Expo Area (Lisbon)

Lisbon invited the world to attend the World Expo in 1998. "The oceans - an inheritance for the future" was the topic of this exhibition. The Expo area continues to impress visitors today.

The 60 hectare large area is located in the east of the city at the river Tejo. It once was the home of 160 land pavilions, in which all participating countries were able to clarify their relationship to the water. In order to prevent a situation like the one after the Expo ´92 in Sevilla, when an enormous area remained a ghost city, the pavilions in Lisbon were converted to fair exhibition areas, administrative buildings, and stockrooms as well as dwellings.
