Fox Glacier (New Zealand)

Thera are two famous glaciers in Westland National Park, which is located in the Alps of New Zealand -the Fox Glacier (panorama picture) and the Franz Josef Glacier. The national park is located in the west of the South Island of New Zealand.

The size and beauty of the Fox Glacier may be experienced best with a helicopter flight over the glacier and a landing made directly on the ice. From above, you can see deep-blue glacier columns, untouched snow fields, and bizarre ice formations. Once you have landed on the ice field of the glacier, you can see the blue Tasman Sea over the mountain summits, because the glacier is only a few kilometers away from the coast. The Fox Glacier has been growing since 1985. In the year 1872 it was named after a visit by the New Zealand Prime minister Sir William Fox.
