Panoramas of the World

Rialto Bridge (Venice)

For quite some time, the bridge was the business centre of the commercial metropolis. Banks and trading firms were located here.  Originally, the bridge was made of wood, in the 16th century it was replaced with stone.

Until the middle of the 19th century it was the only bridge over the Canal Grande.  The design of the architect Antonio da Ponto was preferred to the ones of Michelangelo and others. The bridge today is a point of attraction for tourists.
