Panoramas of the World

Spanish Steps (Rome)

The panorama photo shows the Fontana della Barcaccia. It is clearly older than the Spanish Steps. Pope Urban VIII already commissioned its construction in 1620, 100 years prior to the Spanish Steps.

Basically, nothing is Spanish at these steps. Francesco de Sanctis designed the stairs in 1720. It was financed by a French diplomat and the French king Louis XIV. Because of the adjacent Spanish consulate, the stairs today carry this name. As soon as the weather permits it is besieged by visitors from all over the world. It was made famous by poets and artists of the 19th century.
