The Gateway of India is the landmark of Mumbai. Furthermore, it was the old landing stage of the passenger liners coming from Europe. Today, the place at the monument is crowded with souvenir dealers and tourists. The monument is 26 meters high. The Gujarat style arch was inaugurated on Christmas in 1924 by the Indian viceroy at that time, Earl Reading, in memory of the visit of King George and Queen Mary in 1911. The Gateway of India is the starting point of the harbour tours and the trips to Elephant Island. |
