The basis for this square in front of the Hamburg City Hall was the St. Mark's Square in Venice. The square is clearly older than the City Hall. The City Hall was finished in 1897. The old Hamburg City Hall at the Trostbrücke was destroyed by a large fire in 1842. Today, the City Hall is the seat of the parliament and the senate. The front measures 111 meters, the large central tower is 112 meters high. |
