Panoramas of the World

Reichstag (Berlin)

The Reichstag building became the symbol for the new capital of Germany. And it also became a main attraction for all Berlin visitors. Above all, the accessible dome on the roof of Reichstag attracts many guests - an 800 ton heavy construction out of steel and glass.

The building is more than 100 years old. It was built in 1894 based on a design by Paul Wallot. In 1933 it was partly destroyed by fire. In the last days of the Second World War it burned out again. The Reichstag suffered heavy damage, and the dome had to be blown up.

After the decision naming Berlin as seat of the government was reached, a competition was held, which Sir Norman Foster ended up winning. The renovation cost 600 million Euros.
